A Taiwanese startup, TiSpace, is poised to make history by becoming the first foreign entity to launch a rocket from Japan. This bold move is seen as a catalyst for Japan’s aspirations to become a dominant space hub in Asia.

TiSpace’s Pioneering Launch

TiSpace, a private firm co-founded in 2016 by current and former officials from Taiwan’s space agency, is eagerly awaiting final regulatory approval to launch its 12-meter sounding rocket from Taiki, Hokkaido. This suborbital launch, expected in early 2025, represents a significant milestone for both TiSpace and Japan’s burgeoning space industry.

Japanese Space Industry’s Regulatory Hurdles

The path to this historic launch has not been without its challenges. TiSpace has faced regulatory hurdles and delays, sparking debate over whether Japan should embrace foreign companies in its quest to expand its space industry. However, the potential benefits of attracting overseas business are undeniable, as a successful launch could pave the way for increased international collaboration and investment.

Taiki: A Budding Space Silicon Valley

Taiki, a rural town in Hokkaido, has embraced TiSpace’s project as a symbol of Taiwan-Japan friendship and a driving force behind its ambition to become a “space Silicon Valley.” The town’s officials and experts believe that inviting foreign companies like TiSpace will foster innovation and growth in the local space industry.

Japan’s Ambitious Space Goals

Japan has set ambitious goals for its space industry, aiming to double its size to over $50 billion by the early 2030s. To achieve this, the country plans to launch 30 rockets annually and establish itself as Asia’s premier space transportation hub. TiSpace’s launch could be a pivotal step in realizing these aspirations.

Global Spaceport Race

The global spaceport race is intensifying, with over 50 spaceports currently under construction worldwide. However, only a handful are expected to achieve long-term success and sustainability. Japan’s proactive approach in welcoming foreign companies like TiSpace could give it a competitive edge in this rapidly evolving landscape.

TiSpace’s Expansion Plans

TiSpace has ambitious plans to expand its manufacturing capacity in Japan should the test launch prove successful. This expansion would enable the company to better serve Japanese customers, including Hokkaido-based Letara, which has expressed interest in utilizing TiSpace’s rockets for testing its satellite propulsion system.
