Lakshya Sen, the 22-year-old Indian badminton prodigy, enters his debut Olympics with a promising draw, according to coach Vimal Kumar. Despite facing formidable opponents like Jonatan Christie and Kevin Cordon, Sen’s underdog status and recent technical advancements have fueled optimism for a podium finish.

Sen’s Strategic Refinements

Kumar highlighted Sen’s intensified front-court alertness and improved composure in closing stages as key differentiators. Additionally, the return of two-time Olympic silver medalist Yoo Yong-Sung has elevated Sen’s net game, on-court agility, and focus in high-pressure moments.

Navigating a Favorable Draw

The draw, labeled “fair” by Kumar, positions Sen in Group L alongside familiar rival Christie, Cordon, and Julian Carraggi. Kumar believes Sen’s underdog mentality will enable him to play freely and potentially secure victories against the odds, particularly against Christie.

Olympic Aspirations and Preparation

Sen aims to become the first Indian male shuttler to secure an Olympic medal, a feat that would add to India’s badminton legacy alongside Saina Nehwal and P.V. Sindhu. He has been training rigorously in Marseille with Olympic-bound Christo and Toma Junior Popov, Kiran George, and Ayush Shetty, focusing on speed, finishing drills, service variations, and match practice.

Overcoming Challenges and Looking Ahead

After a challenging period in 2023 and early 2024, Sen secured his Olympic qualification with impressive semifinal finishes at the All England Championship and French Open. He has since adapted to the conditions in Paris, practicing with the official tournament shuttlecock (F-90) and acclimatizing to the slower court conditions.

With unwavering determination and meticulous preparation, Lakshya Sen is ready to unleash his full potential at the Paris Olympics, potentially etching his name in Indian badminton history.
