Zelenskiy’s Bold Appeal for Chinese Pressure on Russia

News 01/08/2024Soumya Smruti SahooBy Soumya Smruti Sahoo3 Mins Read

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has made a bold appeal to China, urging the country to exert significant pressure on Russia to end its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. In a recent statement to French media, Zelenskiy emphasized that while Kyiv does not seek China’s mediation, it strongly desires Beijing’s influence to compel Moscow to cease hostilities.

China’s Role and Zelenskiy’s Expectations

Zelenskiy articulated his position clearly: “If China wants to, it can force Russia to stop this war. I do not want China to act as a mediator. I would like it to put pressure on Russia to put an end to this war,” he stated. This sentiment reflects a broader strategy where Zelenskiy envisions leveraging global powers to influence Russia’s actions rather than relying on direct negotiations with intermediaries.

China, which maintains a “no limits” partnership with Russia, has put forth its own peace plan. This plan includes non-escalation, direct negotiations, and humanitarian aid. Despite these efforts, China did not participate in the recent peace summit held in Switzerland, which excluded Russia. Instead, China has increased its diplomatic outreach, hosting Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba last week. Zelenskiy believes that for any peace summit to yield tangible results, Russia’s participation is crucial.

The Situation on the Ground

The conflict, which has now persisted for nearly 29 months, continues to see significant developments on the battlefield. Russian forces currently control just under 20% of Ukrainian territory, with ongoing incremental advances, particularly in the eastern regions of Ukraine. The capture of Avdiivka in February marked a notable gain for Russia, and recent reports indicate continued pressure on the Ukrainian city of Sloviansk.

Zelenskiy acknowledged the difficulties faced by Ukrainian forces, attributing some of the challenges to delays in receiving military equipment, Russia’s persistence despite heavy losses, and limitations imposed by Western allies on weapon deployment. These factors have contributed to the tough conditions on the eastern front, where Russian forces are concentrating their efforts.

Negotiation Stalemate and Territorial Integrity

While Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed a willingness to negotiate an end to the conflict, the terms proposed are untenable for Ukraine. Putin’s condition—that Ukraine must concede the four regions annexed by Russia in 2022—has been firmly rejected by Zelenskiy. “Giving up territory is impossible. It runs against our constitution. And it is an issue that is up to us alone,” Zelenskiy emphasized.

This stance underscores Ukraine’s commitment to territorial integrity and its refusal to compromise on issues that are deemed non-negotiable. Zelenskiy’s position reflects a broader strategy of resisting Russian demands while seeking international support to pressure Moscow into a favorable settlement.

Summary

President Zelenskiy’s recent appeal to China highlights a strategic shift in Ukraine’s approach to the ongoing conflict with Russia. By urging China to increase its pressure on Russia, Zelenskiy aims to leverage global influence to achieve a resolution. The current situation on the ground remains challenging, with ongoing territorial disputes and difficulties in military support. Zelenskiy’s firm stance on maintaining Ukraine’s territorial integrity further complicates potential negotiations.
