Bangladesh Protests Force High-Profile Resignations

In a dramatic turn of events fueled by relentless student protests, Bangladesh’s Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan and Central Bank Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder have tendered their resignations. This development marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing political turmoil that has gripped the nation, forcing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to seek refuge in New Delhi.

Chief Justice Succumbs to Pressure

Chief Justice Hassan’s resignation came in the wake of escalating student demonstrations demanding his removal. The protesters, who had warned of “dire consequences” should he remain in office, celebrated his departure as a victory for their cause. Law Ministry adviser Asif Nazrul, in a Facebook video post, confirmed the resignation and urged the protesters to maintain peace and refrain from damaging public property.

While Central Bank Governor Talukder also submitted his resignation, it has not yet been formally accepted. Finance Ministry adviser Salehuddin Ahmed cited the critical nature of the position as the reason for the delay. This comes on the heels of the forced resignations of four deputy governors following protests by bank officials alleging corruption within the top ranks.

University Vice Chancellor Steps Down

Adding to the growing list of high-profile departures, Dhaka University Vice Chancellor A.S.M. Maksud Kamal has also resigned. The university has been a focal point of the protests, which initially erupted over government job quotas but quickly evolved into a campaign to oust Hasina. The demonstrations have claimed the lives of approximately 300 people, many of them students.
