Northern States Brace for Heavy Rainfall as Monsoon Intensifies
As the southwest monsoon advances, heavy rains are expected across northern states, including Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh over the weekend.
Monsoon Advancing
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that conditions are becoming favorable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon into the remaining parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh in the next 2-3 days. Very heavy rainfall is anticipated at isolated places in Haryana between June 29 and July 1, and in Punjab between June 30 and July 1.
Rainfall in Himachal Pradesh
Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, experienced heavy rainfall on Friday, with other parts of the state receiving moderate rain. The southwest monsoon reached Himachal Pradesh on June 27. Last year, the state faced significant damage due to torrential rains.
“The state government is fully prepared to deal with any potential disaster-related challenges during the monsoon,” stated Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. He advised residents to remain cautious and avoid rivers and rivulets during this season.
IMD Forecast
The IMD in Shimla predicts intensified rain activity from June 28, with widespread precipitation expected. Light to moderate rain is forecasted for many areas in the low and mid-hill districts between June 28 and July 1.
“Isolated spells of heavy rainfall are very likely in Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur from June 28 to June 30, with peak intensity on June 29 and 30,” stated the IMD. The forecast includes possible thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 30-40 km/h.
Preparedness Measures
Chief Minister Sukhu highlighted that the government has implemented effective measures at various levels. All departments have been instructed to remain vigilant and responsive to potential emergencies.
“The Disaster Management Authority is coordinating with various departments to ensure the implementation of preventive measures. Adequate manpower and machinery have been deployed at identified vulnerable locations. Regular mock drills and disaster management training are being conducted for field staff and officials,” he added.
Recent Challenges
Last year, Himachal Pradesh reported losses exceeding ₹12,000 crore due to unprecedented monsoon rains, which caused flash floods and landslides, leading to the declaration of the state as a ‘natural calamity affected area.’
Chandigarh and Surrounding Areas
The IMD forecasts very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Chandigarh from June 28 to July 2. The region is also expected to experience heavy rainfall spells, adding to the overall intensity of the monsoon season in northern India.
