Controversial Proposal Ignites Political Fray

A proposal by Union Minister of State for the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president, Sukanta Majumdar, to incorporate North Bengal into the Northeastern region has ignited a fervent political debate. The suggestion, while purportedly aimed at bolstering development in the region, has inadvertently stoked fears of a potential state division and exposed fissures within the BJP itself.

Majumdar’s Vision for North Bengal

Mr. Majumdar posits that integrating North Bengal with the Northeast would unlock access to additional central funds and resources, thereby accelerating development. He claims to have presented this proposition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and anticipates support from the state government.

Dissension Within the BJP Ranks

However, the proposal has triggered a maelstrom of reactions, even within the BJP. BJP-supported Rajya Sabha MP Nagendra Roy, a prominent advocate for a separate Greater Cooch Behar state, has called for the fulfillment of this demand prior to any integration with the Northeast. Meanwhile, BJP legislator Bishnu Prasad Sharma from Kurseong has dismissed Majumdar’s proposal as a “utopian idea” designed to obfuscate the party’s declining popularity in the region.

Political Ramifications and Opposition Outcry

The Trinamool Congress (TMC), the ruling party in West Bengal, has vehemently denounced the proposal as an attempt to divide the state. TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy dismissed it as an “unconstitutional and illegal demand,” reflecting the party’s firm stance against any partition of West Bengal.

Historical Context and Regional Dynamics

The controversy surrounding North Bengal’s future is not new. Demands for separate states, including Gorkhaland, have periodically surfaced, reflecting the complex socio-political landscape of the region. The BJP’s recent electoral performance in North Bengal, while still strong, has shown signs of waning support, potentially fueling the party’s internal discord.
