Ban on Private Vehicles to Protect Tiger Habitats

In a decisive move to protect the fragile ecosystem of the Sariska Tiger Reserve (STR), the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) of the Supreme Court has recommended a complete ban on private vehicles within the reserve by March 2025. This measure aims to mitigate the detrimental effects of unregulated vehicular traffic on the tiger population and their habitats.

Electric Shuttle Buses and Alternative Transportation

To accommodate the needs of visitors, including the large number of devotees visiting temples within the reserve, the CEC proposes the implementation of electric shuttle buses as a replacement for private vehicles. Additionally, other eco-friendly transportation options such as tramways, elevated roads, twin tunnels, or ropeways are being considered, pending feasibility studies.

Unregulated Traffic and Its Impact on Tiger Conservation

The CEC’s report, submitted to the Supreme Court on July 22, paints a stark picture of the impact of unchecked vehicular movement on tiger conservation efforts in the STR. The heavy influx of private vehicles, particularly those carrying pilgrims to temples deep within the reserve, has led to habitat degradation, pollution, and fragmentation, further jeopardizing the survival of these majestic creatures.

Creation of a Special Tiger Protection Force

Recognizing the escalating threat of man-animal conflict and poaching due to the increasing tiger population and the presence of villages around the reserve, the CEC has also recommended the establishment of a Special Tiger Protection Force. This specialized unit will be dedicated to safeguarding the tigers and ensuring their well-being in the face of growing challenges.

Summary

The Central Empowered Committee’s recommendations mark a significant step towards ensuring the long-term survival of tigers in the Sariska Tiger Reserve. By banning private vehicles and exploring sustainable transportation alternatives, the committee aims to strike a balance between conservation efforts and the needs of visitors. The creation of a Special Tiger Protection Force further strengthens the commitment to safeguarding this iconic species and its habitat.
