Bihar’s Bridge Safety Crisis Under Judicial Scrutiny

The Supreme Court of India has taken cognizance of the escalating crisis surrounding the safety of bridges in Bihar. Responding to a writ petition filed by advocate Brajesh Singh, a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud issued a notice to the Bihar government, seeking an explanation for the repeated incidents of bridge failures.

Court Calls for Comprehensive Bridge Audit and Action Plan

The petition, which highlighted over ten bridge collapses across Bihar since 2022, urges the court to direct the state government to conduct a high-level structural audit of all bridges. Additionally, it calls for the demolition or retrofitting of weak constructions as a matter of urgency to safeguard lives.

Bihar’s Vulnerability to Bridge Collapses Magnified by Flood Risks

The petition underscores the gravity of the situation, particularly in light of Bihar’s susceptibility to floods. With nearly 75% of the state’s geographical area prone to flooding, the consequences of routine bridge failures are amplified, posing a significant threat to the lives and livelihoods of its residents. The lawyer has urged the court to order the state to formulate a policy for real-time bridge monitoring using sensors and to establish a permanent body to oversee bridge safety in Bihar.
