Financial Fallout: Punjab’s Standoff with the Centre

In a move that has ignited a political firestorm, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has announced a boycott of the upcoming NITI Aayog meeting, citing the central government’s alleged neglect of the state in the Union Budget. Mr. Mann, leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), accused the Centre of pursuing a “political vendetta” against non-BJP-ruled states. This decision comes on the heels of similar boycotts by the Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Karnataka.

Accusations of Fiscal Neglect

Mr. Mann’s grievances stem from the perceived absence of financial allocations for Punjab in the Union Budget, despite the state’s significant contributions to the nation’s grain production. He highlighted the irony of the Finance Minister’s announcement to provide rations to 80 crore people, which conspicuously omitted any mention of Punjab.

Demands for Special Status and Financial Autonomy

The Chief Minister vowed to secure financial resources for the state’s economic revitalization, demanding “special status” for Punjab, a state deeply intertwined with India’s history, both in the freedom struggle and as the nation’s “breadbasket.” Mr. Mann further alleged that the central government is withholding ₹10,000 crore in funds rightfully belonging to the state.

Opposition Cries Foul: A “Suicidal” Decision

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) vehemently condemned the boycott, labeling it a “suicidal” move for Punjab’s interests. Senior SAD leader Daljit Cheema argued that while the Union Budget may have already discriminated against the state, this decision will only exacerbate the situation. He expressed surprise that such a drastic measure was taken without consulting the State Assembly or other political parties.

A Call for Dialogue and Cooperation

Mr. Cheema urged the Chief Minister to prioritize the state’s well-being, prepare a robust case for Punjab’s needs, and fulfill his constitutional duty by engaging in dialogue with the central government.
