Manipur CM to Meet Modi: Crucial Summit Amidst Ethnic Unrest

India 25/07/2024Soumya Smruti SahooBy Soumya Smruti Sahoo2 Mins Read

High-Stakes Dialogue in Delhi

Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh is poised for a critical meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking their first official interaction since the eruption of devastating ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities in May 2023. This high-level dialogue, set to occur on the sidelines of the NITI Aayog meeting and a Chief Ministers’ conclave in New Delhi, carries immense significance for the conflict-ridden state.

Seeking Urgent Solutions for Manipur’s Crisis

Chief Minister Singh has expressed his intention to leverage this opportunity to apprise the Prime Minister of the prevailing situation in Manipur. He aims to implore for immediate solutions to quell the ongoing crisis, which has tragically claimed over 200 lives and displaced more than 70,000 individuals.

Invitation Extended to Kuki-Zo MLAs

In a move towards reconciliation, Singh has extended a personal invitation to 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs, including two Ministers, to participate in an upcoming assembly session scheduled from July 31st to August 6th. This gesture, while symbolic, faces significant challenges due to the deep-rooted psychological divide between the two communities, with many Kuki-Zo MLAs having fled Imphal in the wake of the violence.

Opposition Criticism and Public Sentiment

Prime Minister Modi’s absence from Manipur since the violence erupted has drawn criticism from opposition parties. Public sentiment remains tense, with displaced communities seeking solace in relief camps across Manipur, Mizoram, and Assam. The upcoming meeting between Singh and Modi is viewed with both anticipation and apprehension, as it could potentially shape the trajectory of the ongoing conflict resolution efforts.
