Development Dialogue Strengthens India-Bhutan Bond

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri recently concluded a productive two-day visit to Bhutan, where he engaged in crucial discussions aimed at bolstering the development partnership between the two nations. The centerpiece of his visit was the co-chairing of the third India-Bhutan Development Cooperation Talks (Plan Talks) alongside his Bhutanese counterpart, Aum Pema Choden.

Strategic Focus on 13th Five-Year Plan

The talks, focused on the implementation of the 13th Five Year Plan (FYP), delved into various areas of collaboration, including connectivity, infrastructure development, cultural heritage preservation, healthcare, education, energy, agriculture, skill development, and digital transformation. India has committed a substantial INR/Nu 10,000 crore in development assistance for this period, aligning with Bhutan’s priorities in these sectors.

Celebrating Past Successes and Future Aspirations

Both sides expressed satisfaction with the numerous development projects successfully implemented under the 12th FYP. These projects have yielded tangible results across diverse sectors, contributing to Bhutan’s socio-economic progress.

As a symbolic gesture of their continued partnership, the two foreign secretaries virtually inaugurated 19 schools in Bhutan that were constructed during the previous plan period. This act underscores India’s commitment to supporting Bhutan’s educational infrastructure and human capital development.

High-Level Engagement and Bilateral Dialogue

Mr. Misri’s visit also included a meeting with Bhutan’s Prime Minister, Lyonchhen Dasho Tshering Tobgay, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lyonpo D.N. Dhungyel. These engagements provided an opportunity to exchange views on bilateral matters of mutual interest and reaffirm the enduring friendship between the two nations.
