Congress Raises Alarm Over Voter Turnout Discrepancies Benefiting BJP

Allegations of Discrepancies in Voter Turnout Figures

On August 3, 2024, Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit brought to light a contentious issue regarding voter turnout figures in the recent elections, alleging that discrepancies might have unfairly benefited the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Drawing from a detailed study conducted by the citizens’ group, Vote for Democracy (VFD), Dikshit claimed that the BJP could have secured as many as 79 additional seats due to significant variations between preliminary and final voter turnout figures.

The Congress party has called for an urgent explanation from the Election Commission of India (EC) regarding the reported discrepancies. According to the VFD’s findings, there is an average discrepancy of 4.7% or approximately 4.65 crore votes nationwide. In states like Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, the difference between initial and final voter turnout figures has reportedly soared to 12.5%. These figures, if accurate, suggest a troubling anomaly in the election process.

Call for Accountability and Transparency

Addressing the media, Sandeep Dikshit expressed concerns about the substantial gap in voter turnout figures. He pointed out that while a minor discrepancy of around 1% might be understandable, the observed “massive difference” raises serious questions about the integrity of the election process. Dikshit highlighted the peculiar case of Lakshwadeep, where the difference in voter turnout was reported to be as high as 25%, questioning the validity of such figures.

The Congress party has urged the Election Commission to address these discrepancies with due seriousness, as they directly impact the credibility of the electoral process. Dikshit’s comments reflect broader concerns about the EC’s role and accountability. He emphasized that the Commission, despite being a constitutional authority, must be answerable to the public regarding any doubts or anomalies in the election data.

Concerns Over Delays in Final Voter Turnout Figures

Dikshit also criticized the delay in releasing the final voter turnout figures. He noted that the data recorded in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) is updated every two hours, raising questions about the prolonged timeline for finalizing voter turnout statistics. The Congress leader observed that the EC took 11 days to release the final turnout figures for the first phase, six days for the second phase, and four to five days for the subsequent phases.

The delay in reporting final figures, combined with the reported discrepancies, has fueled suspicions about the transparency and efficiency of the electoral process. Dikshit asserted that while the Election Commission operates under constitutional provisions, it is not exempt from scrutiny and must address any concerns raised by the public.

Summary

The Congress party has raised significant concerns about discrepancies in voter turnout figures that may have disproportionately favored the BJP in the recent elections. The detailed study by Vote for Democracy indicates a substantial gap between preliminary and final turnout figures, prompting a call for greater transparency and accountability from the Election Commission. The delays in releasing final voter turnout data have further exacerbated doubts about the electoral process’s integrity.
