Kavitha Seeks Default Bail in Excise Policy Scam
A Delhi court on July 8 issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding the default bail plea filed by Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K. Kavitha. Kavitha, the daughter of former Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, is seeking bail on the grounds that the chargesheet filed by the CBI was incomplete and defective.
Court Proceedings and Next Hearing
Advocate Nitesh Rana, representing Ms. Kavitha, presented her case in the court of Special Judge (PC Act) Kaveri Baweja at the Rouse Avenue Court. The court has set July 12 as the next date of hearing.
Additionally, the court has reserved its order on whether to take cognizance of the third chargesheet filed by the CBI, with the decision to be announced on July 15. Ms. Kavitha had previously moved the Rouse Avenue Court for bail after the Delhi High Court rejected two bail applications related to corruption and money laundering in the Delhi excise policy scam.
Charges Against Kavitha
The CBI’s case against Ms. Kavitha is based on an FIR filed following a complaint by the Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi, alleging multiple irregularities in the Delhi excise policy for 2021-22, which was later withdrawn by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led State government. Central agencies have alleged that Ms. Kavitha played a significant role in arranging funds for the AAP and acted as a proxy partner for liquor company Indospirit, which benefited from the excise policy.
Arrest and Legal Maneuverings
Ms. Kavitha was arrested in connection with the case in April this year. The central agencies have argued that granting her bail could allow her to influence witnesses in the ongoing investigation.
