The Loss of a Stalwart: Bhattacharjee Leaves an Indelible Legacy

The Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M), mourns the passing of former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, marking the end of an era in the state’s Left movement. Bhattacharjee, a lifelong member of the party, served in various capacities, including a stint on the Politburo, the party’s highest decision-making body.

A Life Dedicated to Public Service and Cultural Enrichment

The Polit Bureau, in its statement, lauded Bhattacharjee’s “distinctive role” as a minister and Chief Minister of the Left Front government. Beyond his political contributions, the party recognized his significant impact on the development of cultural institutions and his unwavering support for progressive cultural values. A passionate advocate for literature and the arts, Bhattacharjee was a poet, playwright, and translator of international literary works. His intellectual curiosity led him to delve deep into the changes in China, culminating in a published book on the subject.

Tributes Pour in from Across the Political Spectrum

Leaders from various political parties expressed their condolences. CPI general secretary D. Raja acknowledged Bhattacharjee’s long and impactful public service career, which garnered widespread admiration. He also emphasized Bhattacharjee’s significant presence in Bengal’s literary and cultural circles. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge conveyed his sympathies, while DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin hailed Bhattacharjee as a resolute Marxist dedicated to social justice and equality. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh remembered him as an “unrepentant communist” deeply committed to secular values and the arts.
