Flood Waters Engulf Assam: A Harrowing Situation

Assam is currently besieged by a calamitous flood, with over 24.5 lakh residents displaced across 30 districts. Major rivers surge beyond danger levels, exacerbating the crisis. This year’s deluge has tragically claimed 52 lives, while landslides and storms have caused an additional 12 fatalities.

Sarma’s Leadership in Crisis Mitigation

In response to the escalating crisis, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma conducted a comprehensive review of relief efforts after visiting the severely impacted Dibrugarh district. Emphasizing proactive governance, Sarma directed officials to prioritize the most vulnerable cases and individuals not covered by existing schemes. He personally addressed the concerns of flood victims and assured them of swift action.

Silver Lining: ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’ Ensures Clean Water

Amidst the widespread devastation, the ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’ has emerged as a beacon of hope, providing clean drinking water to affected communities. Sarma lauded this transformative water supply project for its crucial role in mitigating the hardships faced by flood victims.

Relief Camps and Affected Districts

The flood’s impact is widespread, with districts such as Cachar, Kamrup, Hailakandi, and others bearing the brunt. Over 47,000 people have sought refuge in relief camps, while 4,18,614 individuals in non-relief camps are receiving essential supplies. Even urban areas in Kamrup (Metropolitan), Kamrup, and Dibrugarh have not been spared.

Government’s Commitment to Relief and Rehabilitation

Cabinet Ministers are actively engaged on the ground in various flood-affected districts, underscoring the government’s commitment to providing relief and rehabilitation. Sarma and his team are dedicated to assessing the damage, addressing grievances, and implementing solutions. The chief minister emphasized their unwavering dedication to public service and proactive governance.

Rivers in Peril, Infrastructure Damaged

The Brahmaputra and Barak rivers, along with their tributaries, continue to flow above danger levels, posing a significant threat. The floods have wreaked havoc on infrastructure, damaging roads, bridges, and other vital assets.
