German Chancellor to Visit India in October: Focus on Business and Strategic Partnerships

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is scheduled to visit India in the second half of October for crucial inter-governmental consultations. According to German Ambassador Philipp Ackermann, the visit will prioritize discussions on ease of doing business, migration, geopolitics, and climate change.

Strategic Agendas

The upcoming visit holds significance as it coincides with the 18th Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business 2024 (APK 2024), scheduled from October 24 to 26 in New Delhi. Discussions are expected to center around strengthening economic ties and fostering deeper cooperation between India and Germany.

Key Focus Areas

A major highlight of the discussions will be the Indian Navy’s multi-billion dollar deal for six conventional submarines under P-75I. German firm TKMS and Spain’s Navantia are competing for this lucrative contract, which is poised to play a pivotal role in bilateral talks during the Chancellor’s visit.

Business Optimism

Stefan Halusa, Director General of the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce (AHK India), highlighted the unprecedented optimism among German businesses towards India. Emphasizing on ‘Make in India’, Halusa outlined the top expectations of German industries, including regulatory simplification, reduction of corruption, and a stable legal framework.

Business Outlook Survey

The “German Indian Business Outlook 2024” survey conducted by KPMG in Germany and AHK India revealed positive forecasts for the next five years. A significant majority of German companies anticipate growth in turnover and profits, buoyed by factors such as low labor costs and political stability in India.

Future Investments

Nearly six in ten German companies are planning to increase their investments in India during the current financial year. The survey also indicated that a substantial number of firms intend to establish India as a global competence center or shared service hub in the coming years.

Educational and Workforce Exchange

Dr. Ackermann highlighted the robust educational exchange between India and Germany, noting that Indian students form the largest non-German student community in Germany. He underscored the growing demand for Indian IT professionals and STEM graduates in Germany’s workforce.

Outlook

With bilateral engagements set to deepen across various sectors, including machinery, automotive, and chemicals, the visit of Chancellor Olaf Scholz aims to further strengthen the longstanding Indo-German strategic partnership and economic collaboration.

The visit of Chancellor Olaf Scholz underscores Germany’s commitment to enhancing its ties with India across economic and strategic domains, setting the stage for robust bilateral cooperation in the years ahead.
