The OnePlus Open isn’t just OnePlus’ first foldable phone; it’s a testament to the brand’s commitment to innovation. This device seamlessly blends a refined design with top-tier performance, making it a serious contender in the foldable market.

Design & Build:

The OnePlus Open feels like a luxury item in your hands. The vegan leather back not only looks elegant but also provides a comfortable grip. The phone feels surprisingly sturdy when folded, and the hinge mechanism is smooth and reassuring. The camera module blends seamlessly into the back, adding to the phone’s sleek aesthetics.

Display:

The dual displays are a sight to behold. The 6.31-inch cover display is vibrant and responsive, perfect for quick interactions. Unfold the phone, and you’re greeted by a gorgeous 7.82-inch AMOLED panel that’s perfect for multimedia consumption and multitasking. Both displays offer high refresh rates and HDR support, delivering a visually immersive experience.

Performance:

Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and up to 16GB of RAM, the OnePlus Open is a performance powerhouse. It effortlessly handles demanding tasks, multitasking is a breeze, and even the most graphically intensive games run smoothly. In my experience, the phone rarely stutters or slows down, even under heavy use.

Camera:

The triple rear camera system, co-developed with Hasselblad, delivers impressive results. Photos are sharp, detailed, and exhibit excellent dynamic range. Low-light performance is notably good, thanks to the large sensors and computational photography. The portrait mode produces natural-looking bokeh, and the video capabilities are equally impressive.

Battery Life:

The 4805mAh battery comfortably lasts a full day with moderate to heavy usage. While it lacks wireless charging, the 67W SuperVOOC fast charging makes up for it, replenishing the battery in under an hour.

Software & User Experience:

OxygenOS 13.1, based on Android 13, provides a clean and intuitive interface tailored for the foldable form factor. It’s packed with features designed to enhance multitasking and productivity, such as split-screen mode, floating windows, and app continuity. The software experience is smooth and responsive, with no noticeable bugs or glitches.

Connectivity & Additional Features:

The OnePlus Open supports 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, and NFC. The fingerprint sensor, embedded in the power button, is fast and reliable. The phone also features stereo speakers for immersive audio. Notably, it retains the iconic OnePlus Alert Slider, a feature often missing from other foldables.

Buying Recommendation:

  • Who’s it for? Anyone looking for a premium foldable phone with top-notch performance, a versatile camera system, and a refined design.
  • Pros: Stunning displays, powerful performance, excellent camera system, long-lasting battery, fast charging, sleek design, OxygenOS optimizations.
  • Cons: Lacks wireless charging, crease still visible on the inner display, premium price.
  • Overall: The OnePlus Open is a compelling entry into the foldable market. It offers a polished user experience, powerful performance, and a capable camera system in a sleek package. While it’s not perfect, its strengths far outweigh its weaknesses, making it a worthy contender for anyone looking for a flagship foldable.
