The Moto Edge 50 Ultra is Motorola’s most ambitious flagship smartphone yet. With a headline-grabbing 200MP camera and premium specs, it aims to challenge the established players. After spending some time with it, here’s my take:

Design & Build:

The Edge 50 Ultra is a head-turner. Its sleek glass back curves seamlessly into an aluminum frame, creating a premium and sophisticated look. The vegan leather option (available in some regions) adds a unique and luxurious touch. Despite its large size, the phone is comfortable to hold, thanks to the curved edges and balanced weight distribution.

Display:

The 6.67-inch pOLED display is a stunner. It’s incredibly bright, vivid, and smooth thanks to the 144Hz refresh rate. Colors pop, and details are sharp, making it a joy to consume media or play games. The curved edges add a touch of elegance, though some might find them a bit distracting.

Performance:

Under the hood, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip, combined with up to 12GB of RAM, delivers exceptional performance. Everyday tasks are handled effortlessly, multitasking is a breeze, and demanding games run smoothly without breaking a sweat. This is a true flagship-grade powerhouse.

Camera:

The 200MP main camera is undoubtedly the star of the show. It captures incredibly detailed photos with vibrant colors and excellent dynamic range. Even low-light performance is impressive, thanks to the large sensor and pixel binning technology. The 50MP ultrawide and 12MP telephoto lenses offer versatility, though their performance doesn’t quite match the main sensor. The 60MP front-facing camera is a selfie lover’s dream, capturing sharp and detailed self-portraits.

Battery Life:

The 4610mAh battery is sufficient for a full day of moderate to heavy use. You can comfortably get through a day of browsing, streaming, gaming, and photography without worrying about running out of juice. The 125W TurboPower charging is incredibly fast, juicing up the battery from 0% to 100% in less than 30 minutes.

Software & User Experience:

The Edge 50 Ultra runs a near-stock version of Android 12 with Motorola’s My UX on top. It’s a clean and user-friendly interface with minimal bloatware. Motorola has added a few thoughtful touches, like gesture-based controls and personalization options. The software experience is smooth and responsive, with regular updates ensuring a secure and up-to-date experience.

Connectivity & Additional Features:

The phone offers a wide range of connectivity options, including 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, and NFC. It’s also dust and water-resistant (IP52), providing some peace of mind against accidental spills. There’s no headphone jack or expandable storage, but the dual stereo speakers offer surprisingly good sound quality.

Buying Recommendation:

Who’s it for? The Moto Edge 50 Ultra is ideal for users who crave the latest technology and want a top-tier smartphone experience without the exorbitant price tag. It’s perfect for photographers, content creators, gamers, and anyone who demands the best performance and camera capabilities.

Pros:

  • Exceptional 200MP camera system
  • Powerful Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor
  • Gorgeous and smooth 144Hz pOLED display
  • Blazing-fast 125W TurboPower charging
  • Clean and intuitive software experience

Cons:

  • Ultrawide and telephoto cameras not as impressive as the main sensor
  • No headphone jack or expandable storage
  • May be too large for some users

Overall:

The Moto Edge 50 Ultra is a statement phone from Motorola, proving that they can compete in the flagship arena. Its 200MP camera is a marvel, capturing stunning photos and videos. It’s backed by top-notch performance, a gorgeous display, and ultra-fast charging. While it’s not perfect, it offers exceptional value for the price, making it a compelling choice for those seeking a premium smartphone experience.
